If you're thinking about raising chickens, you need a coop to keep them safe and comfortable. A walk-in chicken coop allows you to easily access the space and clean it out. With some basic carpentry skills, you can build your own chicken coop and save money on the cost of buying one.

Materials

  • 2x4 lumber
  • plywood
  • chicken wire
  • roofing material (shingles or metal)
  • hinges
  • latch
  • nails
  • screws
  • wood glue
  • paint or stain (optional)

Instructions

  1. Choose a level spot to build the coop.
  2. Measure and mark out the dimensions of the coop on the ground.
  3. Use 2x4 lumber to build the frame of the coop. Cut the pieces to size and attach them together with screws and wood glue.
  4. Cover the frame with plywood and secure it with nails.
  5. Cut openings for the door and windows, and attach hinges to the door.
  6. Install chicken wire around the coop, making sure to cover all openings.
  7. Add a roof using shingles or metal roofing material. Make sure it overhangs the walls to protect the coop from rain.
  8. Add a latch to the door to keep it closed.
  9. If desired, paint or stain the coop to protect it from the elements.
  10. Add straw or wood shavings to the floor of the coop for bedding.
