Materials

Plans

Before you begin, it's important to have a detailed set of plans to follow. You can find many free plans online, or you can purchase plans from a woodworking store. Make sure the plans include detailed measurements and instructions for each step of the build.

Foundation

1. Clear the area where you want to build the coop and level the ground.
2. Mark the corners of the coop and dig post holes using a post hole digger.
3. Set the 4x4 posts in the holes and use concrete to secure them in place.
4. Attach a horizontal beam to the posts at the top, using screws or bolts.

Framing

1. Using the plans as a guide, cut the 2x4 lumber to size for the framing.
2. Build the walls and attach them to the foundation posts using screws.
3. Add cross bracing for extra support.
4. Build the roof frame and attach it to the top of the walls.

Siding

1. Cut the exterior-grade plywood to size for the walls and roof.
2. Attach the plywood to the framing using screws or nails.
3. Cut openings for windows and doors as needed.
4. Install hardware cloth over the openings to keep predators out.

Roof

1. Choose your roofing material and cut it to size.
2. Install the roofing material, starting at the bottom and working your way up.
3. Use roofing nails to secure the material in place.

Nesting Box

1. Using the plans as a guide, build the nesting box.
2. Attach the nesting box to the wall of the coop using screws.
3. Add straw or other bedding material to the nesting box.

Door

1. Using the plans as a guide, build the door for the coop.
2. Attach the door to the coop using hinges.
3. Add a latch or lock to keep the door securely closed.
